‘Everyone’s equal before us’: SC to defamation complainant against Rahul Gandhi | Raj Singh

1 min read

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday made it clear that everyone is equal before the law, while hearing a matter concerning a criminal defamation case against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi. A bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan addressed the complainant, emphasizing that standard legal procedures must be followed by all parties involved, regardless of their political stature or the nature of the high-profile case. The court directed the petitioner to pursue the matter through appropriate judicial channels rather than expecting special treatment. This legal proceeding stems from remarks made by the senior Congress leader, which have triggered multiple legal challenges across different jurisdictions. The apex court's observation reinforces the fundamental constitutional principle of equality before the law, ensuring that high-profile political disputes are handled strictly in accordance with established judicial norms and due process.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said, “everyone is equal” before it and asked the complainant in a criminal defamation case against the leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to follow the prescribed procedure if he wanted an early hearing, after his lawyer alleged that the court registry was treating the Congress leader as a “VVIP”.
