Haldwani Row BACKFIRES On Rahul Gandhi, SC/ST Act FIR Filed Over “Purification” Remark| Dr.Manish Kr
A First Information Report has been registered against senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in Uttarakhand. The legal action stems from remarks made by Gandhi regarding an alleged purification ritual that took place following Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's visit to Haldwani. The controversy erupted after Kharge visited the region, and subsequent local rituals drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, particularly Rahul Gandhi. The comments made during this discourse have now resulted in formal legal proceedings against the parliamentarian under stringent stringent anti-atrocity laws. Authorities in the state are currently reviewing the case following the formal complaint, which alleges that the remarks have caused deep offense and violation under the specific provisions of the SC/ST Act.
Rahul Gandhi has been booked under the SC/ST Act in Uttarakhand over his remarks on the alleged purification ritual held after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s visit to Haldwani. Gandhi had called the ritual “untouchability disguised as purification” and demanded an FIR against those responsible. Now, following a complaint alleging caste-related and derogatory remarks, Uttarakhand Police has registered an FIR against Gandhi under BNS Sections 196 and 299 and the SC/ST Act.
