One Nation One Election: Joint polls for 22 states/UTs with Lok Sabha 2029! | Dr. Manish Kumar
The Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the "One Nation, One Election" proposal convened for a crucial meeting on Monday. Prominent opposition leaders actively participated in the discussions regarding the implementation of simultaneous polls. According to reports, the government is planning to conduct joint elections for 22 states and Union Territories alongside the Lok Sabha elections in the year 2029. This ambitious electoral reform aims to reduce the massive expenditure incurred during frequent elections and minimize administrative disruptions caused by the imposition of the Model Code of Conduct at different times. While supporters argue that synchronized polls will ensure policy continuity and boost developmental work, several opposition parties have raised concerns regarding federalism and the practical feasibility of dissolving state assemblies prematurely to align election schedules across the entire nation.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the 'One Nation, One Election' (ONOE) proposal held a crucial meeting on Monday, with several prominent opposition leaders also participating in the deliberations. JPC Chairman PP Chaudhary said that nearly 99 per cent of stakeholders consulted so far are in favour of holding simultaneous elections across the country. The development comes amid reports suggesting that the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' system could be implemented as early as 2029 instead of 2034. If implemented, Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections could be held simultaneously in 2029.
