Punjab Elections 2027: Amit Shah Signals Akali Dal’s Return to NDA, BJP Alliance Buzz Grows
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given a strong indication that the Shiromani Akali Dal may soon rejoin the National Democratic Alliance ahead of the upcoming Punjab Assembly elections in 2027. Speaking at an event in Delhi, Shah predicted the formation of an NDA government in Punjab without explicitly naming the regional party. This marks the first occasion that senior leadership from the Bharatiya Janata Party has publicly hinted at reviving the past alliance with the Akali Dal. Both parties had previously severed their long-standing ties in 2020 over contentious farm laws, which eventually led them to contest the 2022 state elections separately. Political analysts believe that rekindling this coalition could significantly alter the political landscape of Punjab by consolidating traditional voter bases. Formal announcements and seat-sharing discussions are expected to follow as preparations for the 2027 electoral battle gradually gain momentum across the state.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is expected to return to the NDA fold soon. Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah hinted at this indirectly. Without naming any party, he claimed an NDA government would be formed in Punjab during an event in Delhi. This is the first time that the BJP's top brass has hinted at an alliance with the Akali Dal ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections.
